Information Literacy / Instruction
The Art Institute understands the need for information literacy - that students must be able to recognize when information is needed and then have the ability to locate, evaluate, and properly use that information. With the great amount of information available to students through the Internet and varied forms of media, it is more important than ever to ensure they have these abilities. Students also need to be educated about copyright issues surrounding their use of information and ideas, and be aware of how to properly write citations for the materials they use, or how to go about obtaining permission to use information if a citation is not adequate. There are many options available, but students often limit their searches to a single source without considering the wealth of information available elsewhere. Library orientation will make this information readily available: all first-quarter students attend a formal, librarian-led information session as part of the English curriculum, which allows students to become familiar with the variety of information sources, and includes a demonstration of the electronic databases to which Ai York subscribes. In addition to offering instruction that speaks to these issues, the general education department will maintain its proofreading service, called The WriterÕs Block, now in its seventh year. This service allows students (and staff/faculty) to submit all written assignments to be checked for errors, including citation. In addition to library orientation, general education instructors act as guest speakers in classes within the majors to review the research processes, in an ongoing effort to promote information literacy.
